Hello, October! 🍂

This week in Riversdale, you can fill an entire building with Saskatchewan art, watch a 100-year-old silent movie with a completely improvised soundtrack, eat for a good cause, try pickleball, watch a bunch of movies nobody — including the filmmakers — has ever seen before, and get relationship advice from people absolutely not qualified to give it.

Now we’re talking.

So, what’s up in Riversdale this week?

🎨 THURSDAY: Side Effects Creative Exhibition

October 1 | 5–10:30 PM

Frankly | 433 20th St. W | $10

⭐ ATOMIC PRAIRIE PICK

We like art. So does Frankly. Apparently enough to fill a building with it.

Side Effects Creative Exhibition brings together 76 Saskatchewan-based artists for one big creative night on 20th Street.

There’s a poster show. Artist + maker market. Skate demo and trick competitions. Food from Postal Pizza and Taco ’Bout It. Local beer from High Key Brewing. And at 9 PM, everybody heads downstairs for a live basement show with Cheap Heat.

Basically: art + pizza + skateboards + basement show + general chaos.

Yep. Go.

MEMOFest ticket holders get in free with their badge.

🎬 THURSDAY: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

October 1 | 7:30 PM

Roxy Theatre | 320 20th St. W | Ticketed

After his fantastic 2024 performance improvising a full score for The Phantom of the Opera, digital accordionist Michael Bridge is back at the historic Roxy.

This time, he’ll create an entirely improvised live score for the legendary 1923 silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

A historic movie palace. A silent film. A guy making up the entire soundtrack while you watch.

This is exactly the kind of weird night out we like.

❤️ SATURDAY: Grilling for Gratitude

October 3 | Gather Local Market

414 Ave. B S

A community BBQ with a purpose.

Grilling for Gratitude brings people together at Gather Local Market for food, community and a little appreciation for the people doing good things around us. $5 smoky; $2 pop. Support the Riversdale Community Association!

Grab something to eat, explore the market and take a wander along River Landing while you’re there.

🏓 MONDAY: Pickleball!

October 5 | 6 PM

King George School | 721 Ave. K S | FREE

Never played pickleball?

Perfect.

Riversdale Community Association’s Monday pickleball is free and open to the neighbourhood. No need to be an expert. No fancy equipment. They have paddles to borrow if you don't have one!

Just try it.

And pickleball is only one of the free programs happening in Riversdale this fall. Riversdale Community Association has a whole lineup of no-cost activities happening throughout the week, including Open Gym, kids’ programming, Story Lab and more.

Check out the Riversdale Community Association on Facebook for current programs, dates and updates.

🎞️ TUESDAY: One Take Super 8

October 6 | Doors 6:30 PM | Screening 7 PM

Roxy Theatre | 320 20th St. W | FREE | All ages

Here’s the fun part:

Nobody has seen these movies before. Not even the people who made them.

Local filmmakers were each given one roll of Super 8 film. The films were shot and edited entirely in-camera — no cuts, no splices and no chance to see what they made until it appears on the big screen at the Roxy.

One roll. One take. Hope for the best.

The result is an evening of brand-new locally made short films making their world premieres alongside their own filmmakers.

And yes, Atomic Prairie has a horse in this race. Keep an eye out for Art Walk. 👀

FREE admission.

🤡 WEDNESDAY: Couples Clownselling

October 7 | Doors 6:30 PM | Show 7 PM

Art Bar | 229 20th St. W | $30 | 19+

Relationship counselling is expensive.

Couples Clownselling has found another way.

Professional comedians and their real-life partners take the stage to air out their domestic blunders, baggage and disagreements — then receive relationship advice from people who are extremely, emphatically not licensed therapists.

Audience members can even submit anonymous questions for the couples.

The show has appeared at Just For Laughs Vancouver and is making its Saskatoon debut at Art Bar.

Come for the laughs. Stay for the relationship advice you should absolutely not follow.

That’s our little taste of what’s happening in Riversdale this week.

One of our favourite things about this neighbourhood is that you don’t necessarily need an itinerary. Head out the door, walk toward 20th Street or the river, and see what you find.

See you around the neighbourhood!
